Product Description:
Reed Solliday is a veteran firefighter with more than fifteen years experience in both fighting fires and investigating their origins. His sterling reputation precedes him and lands him the role as the investigator on the case of an arsonist whose penchant for fire has resulted in homicide. His only problem is his new partner.Homicide detective Mia Mitchell misses her old partner. He actually listened to her and valued her presence. Not like Reed. But she persists because she knows that the arsonist's motivations for the fire can't simply be insurance money. As yet another fire is set and another person killed, Mia finally convinces Reed that there is a more insidious force at work. But this arsonist is unlike any other that Reed has ever encountered. His thirst for destruction is unquenchable, his desire so deep that annihilating structures is no longer enough. Murder is his only satisfaction. He knows that Reed and Mia are closing in on him, but he's not going down quietly. He's taking out the people dearest to Reed and Mia, one by one, and then he's setting his sights on Mia.

This is yet another excellent book from Karen Rose that you won't be able to put down until you finish it, and will leave you wanting to know more about Mia, Reed and the rest of the supporting cast. It has it all -- suspense, romance and a good bit of mystery. A top-notch read.
One thing I love about Karen Rose's books is that she creates characters that you care about and want to keep reading about, even after their story is finished. Mia and Reed were no exceptions. And that's the one thing I'd like to see her change. All her characters are loaded down with problems, which makes them realistic. However, as soon as their story is complete and they become a supporting player in the subsequent person's book, they suddenly become perfect. First Caroline, now Dana. Both had more baggage than any one person should ever have, yet both were Superwomen by the time we subsequent saw them, with perfect husbands and perfect kids and perfect lives. And unfortunately, that's not believable and is very disappointing for those who still cared about them once their book was done.

I notice this book has received good reviews and each to his own but I just felt Reed and Mia were terribly annoying characters. I had liked Mia in previous books but I got tired of her attitude throughout this one. Both her and Reed have so much baggage, I just couldn't see the connection between them or any real romance. They fought more than anything else.
Okay for the thriller part. The storyline was good and KR puts it all together well. I like how she divides the story into timelines so you know exactly when things are taking place. In this way I also could skim part of the killers brutal murders which I felt were a bit over the top for gore. I realize serial killers are violent and no doubt insane but the amount of people brutally killed in the story was a little much.
I think KR is a talented writer but this was one I didn't care for the leading people and I notice the violence gets worse in every book so wish she could write without quite so much brutal violence. I think the story could have been as interesting without the needless torture of every victim.
As I said each to his own but think I give up on reading another of KR books. I can handle reading some violence but not when its filled with torture and brutality.

I was hooked from page one. Ms Rose did an outstanding job with this novel. The characters had depth and the story was so compelling. I've yet to be disappointed with her writing. The woman knows her stuff.

I enjoyed the fast pace of the story, well built and never dragging; even if you start to suspect the identity of the killer halfway through the book, the story and the characters are so powerful that you are compelled to read on.
Compared to some other romantic mystery writers, Karen Rose puts a lot of care into creating real-world characters, flawed, human, vulnerable and therefore more enjoyable.
