Product Description:
He was pure, unadulterated trouble. Johnny Harris is home again, his too-tight jeans and damn-your-eyes belligerence honed to perfection by a ten-year stretch in federal prison for murder. Now he's out on parole and ready for the job Rachel Grant has promised to help him begin a new life. Unlike the rest of the town, Rachel has always believed in her former student's innocence. But one thing has changed...
The sullenly handsome boy she remembers is still sullen, still handsome...but no longer a boy. And now the small Kentucky town is alive with gossip and whispers of a scandal, as friendship turns to passion and Rachel abandons a lifetime of propriety in the ex-con's arms. Then the killer strikes again. All evidence points to Johnny Harris, but Rachel knows he is innocent. And she knows she is next...as a shattering truth is uncovered and dark passions explode in the relentless summer heat.
Amazon.com Review:
High school teacher Rachel Grant believed in her student Johnny Harris's innocence even after he was convicted of murdering his girlfriend. Now, 10 years later, he's out on parole and Rachel has taken him under her wing, even finding a job for him. It isn't long before their relationship changes and Rachel and Johnny become much more intimate. But when another murder occurs and Johnny is the prime suspect, can Rachel prove his innocence before it's too late? Karen Robards defines passion in this story of love and scandal in a small Kentucky town. One Summer is an outstanding novel that readers will turn to again and again.

Basically the headline says it all! I loved this book!! The characters, the plot, and the mystery were all A+. I did not know until the very end who the killer was, the mystery was that good! I loved Johnny Harris and Rachel! The pages sizzle and the love scenes are very full of passion. This book is definitely a keeper and it will be one that I will keep re-reading!

...but it won't be my last!
I LOVE a tortured hero....and they don't get much more tortured than Johnny. Raised by an abusive alcoholic father, Johnny and all his siblings were labeled as "no good" trash and were alienated by most of the affluent townspeople. Rachel was Johnny's teacher, 5 years older, and was one of the only people that ever believed in and cared about Johnny. Johnny was convicted of killing a classmate and sentenced to do time in prison. The story begins as Johnny is released from prison and returns home after being offered a job by Rachel in her father's hardware store.
What sets this story apart from others is the hero Johnny. He is a mess from all that has happened to him in his life. From the abuse that he suffered in the hands of his father to the abuse that he faces in prison, his story will touch even the most hardened of hearts.
Johnny has always wanted Rachel, and the ways in which Johnny sets out to become a better man for Rachel are heartwarming.
The mystery is HORRIBLE, and the question of "who done it?" is answered in the very end of this book....a major letdown and a twist that left me saying "huh?"
Definitely read this one for the romance and not for the mystery, but know this...Johnny and Rachel will stay in your heart for a very long time!

This is by far one of my favorite books from author Karen Robards. It keeps you guessing and you'll not want to put the book down. I loved these characters and how they were brought together in this story.

After hearing many times that this is Karen Robards' best contemporary, I had to read it... and was pretty disappointed. It wasn't awful, but definitely did not live up to the hype. The story was unbelievable, the suspense was stupid, in general the characters just didn't seem to pull me in... Falls short, IMO.
