But when he finds Charlotte, he is a little surprised at what he discovers and not entirely sure he wants to turn her over to his employer.
Nick Gentry is a man full of secrets and hidden depths. He has a complicated and sorted past and is full of endearing contradictions. Charlotte (Lottie) is warm hearted and deserting her family and duties for the past two years goes against the loyalty and honesty everyone knows her for. Together they forge an unlikely bond and together they fight the demons that lurk in both of their pasts.
This is a surprisingly kinky little tale for a historical romance. There are quite a few steamy scenes and I say Bravo! The sexual romps are adventurous and imaginative and a lot different from the normal snog sessions we generally read about. However, some are so detailed, choreographed and precise that they came off as a little clinical and for lack of a better word, studied. I prefer a little more spontaneity and passion in my kink rather than practiced textbook maneuvers, but that's just me.
Nick and Lottie compliment each other beautifully and their relationship is an easy one with none of excessive emotional game playing. We get a glimpse into the lives of the previous Bow Street babe and their beauties and plenty of action and snogging to keep us turning the pages eagerly. Lisa Kleypas tells a great story!

My favorite of this series, and I have loved the previous two! The description is handled by other reviewers, I will only add that I think the characters are well drawn and have been carried extremely well from book to book. Lisa Kleypas has a number of really well done series in historical romance. She has that special "it" that keeps readers coming back. Nick is one of those characters who raises your heart rate!

I'm looking for great stories with creativity. The potential was here, but it wasn't developed as I would have liked. I enjoyed the characters Nick and Lottie.
THE FIRST PART OF THE STORY:
Nick was orphaned as a child, lived on the streets and was abused in a prison ship. He became a famous crime lord. Then he became a good guy by joining the Bow Street Runners for three years. Because of his childhood abuse, he feared being touched by anyone and never had sex with a woman. At age 24, he goes to a brothel and selects the madam as his choice. She is touched by his manner and becomes his lover and teacher for three years. She ends their relationship saying it's time for him to move on. He still has no desire for other women, until he sees Lottie.
Lottie's parents needed money, so they promised her/sold her to Lord Radnor as a young girl. He would visit their home and have private sessions with Lottie in a locked room in which he fondled her. He paid for her to attend a school where the teachers followed specific rules he wanted for her. She was deprived of food when he thought she was gaining weight. Her hands were tied to a chair if he thought she fidgeted too much. She was told not to speak unless her thoughts were complete sentences. His goal was to make her into his vision of perfection. She ran away from the school and was in hiding for two years working as a companion to an older woman. Radnor hired Nick to find her.
CAUTION SPOILERS:
I loved the interaction of Nick and Lottie when they very first met and up until they married. When Lottie and her employer Marcus learn that Nick was hired to take her back to Radnor, Marcus offers to marry Lottie to save her from Radnor. Before she makes a decision she asks for a private moment with Nick. In that scene, she offers to be his mistress if he will protect her from Radnor. He asks to sample her wares before he decides, so she allows him to kiss and fondle her. I got the feeling that he was doing this to see if his body could be attracted to her and respond to her since he had never been drawn to a woman before. He did respond, and as a result he offered to marry her instead of having her as his mistress. Maybe I missed the author's intentions here, but I enjoyed my interpretation.
I was disappointed with the last 60% of the book, after they married. I was hoping for something more insidious from Lord Radnor, maybe something like stalking her, kidnapping her and holding her for a longer period, or maybe kidnapping her before she married Nick and continuing his sick attempts to make her over. I was hoping to see Nick's talents for searching and overcoming bad guys to find her, get her away from Radnor and exact a proper revenge. This was my own hopeful imagination wanting something a little different. Instead the story during the last part of the book was ordinary, predictable, standard romance fare. She did get taken by Radnor but she got away through no special talent of anyone, but by luck.
Lottie's parents arranged a marriage for her with Radnor. They received a lot of money for themselves. Granted, many arranged marriages are based on financial motivation, but in this story the parents were almost evil. When Nick offered to pay their debts and support them financially in the future, they refused. Since their refusal was not rational and did not make sense, I saw them as additional villains. Therefore, I wanted to see what other evil deeds they would do. The author didn't pursue this line, other than one more event which wasn't enough for me.

Nick Gentry is a man with a criminal past who has been forced by his magistrate brother-in-law to become a Bow Street Runner. He's currently on a private commission for a lord who is hunting a run-away fiancee. Nick is good, even relentless, at whatever he turns his task to, so he finds her... but does he have to return her to the other man?
There is always something intriguing about a man with a dark past falling in love and possibly being redeemed. Although there's nothing too new or extraordinary here, Nick makes for a good hero with a bad reputation. And Charlotte is a good match, unflappable, with inner strength, she is able to take her new situation in stride. Their love story is sweet.
Sadly, there isn't much for Nick and Charlotte to fight for or against. Yes, they need to overcome their own fears, particularly Nick, and let themselves love, but they don't throw up many obstacles, which, for a change, is good. But the nasty lord, Charlotte's horrible parents and society in general also aren't enough of a threat. Nor is the denouement that dramatic.
However, I still loved both of the main characters and was moved by their love story. Overall it was a good romance with two appealing characters.

I really enjoy Lisa Kleypas books. She gets the chemistry right and her characters are all strong. I liked "It Happened One Autumn" and "Then Came You" better.
