Grant Morgan is one of London's most eligible and unattainable bachelors. He's also a powerful member of the Bow Street Runners, and when he's called to the waterfront late one night to investigate a drowning victim, Grant is stunned to recognize the face of Vivien Rose Duvall, a well-known woman of the night. He's even more startled when he realizes that she's alive. With no one to care for her, Grant carries Vivien to his home and revives her, only to learn that she is suffering from amnesia.
Vivien hesitantly accepts her handsome rescuer's claim that she is his mistress, despite her misgivings about her true identity. Nevertheless, she can't deny the marks on her throat that prove her near-drowning in the Thames was not an accident, and now she must trust the man who claims her as his paramour, for her life is in danger. As Grant searches for Vivien's attacker, the two find themselves falling in love, all the while struggling to stay one step ahead of the evil forces that will stop at nothing to see Vivien dead.
Kleypas's characters are not your run-of-the-mill Regency fare--Grant lacks a noble lineage while Vivien's 'membership' in the demimonde is unusual to say the least--which makes them even more fascinating and thoroughly absorbing. Toss in a puzzling mystery to solve and an intriguing look inside the workings of the famous Bow Street Runners, and you've got a novel well worth reading. No wonder Lisa Kleypas's books are consistent bestsellers--you won't be able to put this one down.--Lois Faye Dyer

This is probably my all time favorite romance. I just loved how Victoria and Grant learned to love each other and how they interacted with one another.
Synopsis:
Grant Morgan, Bow Street Runner extraordinaire, is called to the Thames to pick up the victim of a drowning. But he's shocked to see Vivian Duvall, England's most highly paid prostitute, and what's even more shocking is that she's alive!
Vivian woke up in a stranger's bed, with a stranger's clothes and she has no idea who she is. Now Grant and Vivian have met before, and let's say they didn't get along too well.
The rest of the book is about the two candidates getting to know each other and how Vivian is trying to get her memory back and how Grant is realizing he cares for Vivian more than he'd like to admit.
I don't agree with other reviewers about the whole petty revenge thing. I got why he did it, and he actually really didn't do anything except make a little white lie. And "Vivian" kinda deserved it since she started the entire child like revenge thing.

Great hero. Pretty good heroine. She has amnesia so it's hard to judge her. Good ending.
Story brief:
Someone tries to drown Vivian. Grant finds her and tends to her at his home. She is a famous courtesan who spread false rumors about Grant, so he intends to get some revenge. Instead he falls for her. She has amnesia and doesn't know her name. Below are a couple of parts I didn't like and one part I did like.
CAUTION SPOILERS:
Page 161, Grant thinks to himself as he falls in love with her, "No one must ever find out how he (Grant) cared for her." I didn't understand what the problem would be.
On page 193, one of Vivian's former lovers tells her that she was pregnant before the attempted drowning. She doesn't tell this to Grant, which made no sense to me. She was trying to learn about her past, Grant was helping her, why keep this a secret? It would have moved things along better. When Grant later learns of this and asks why she didn't tell him, she says "if you thought I had deliberately ended the pregnancy you would have despised me" (page 225). I still didn't buy it. If he were going to despise her, it would be for her other actions such as spreading false rumors about him or her courtesan activities. This was weak.
I was delighted with the scene on page 245, where Grant (a Bow Street Runner) goes to a private club to talk to Lord Lane. The butler refuses to admit him. Grant shoves his foot in the door and says to the butler "Forgive me, I've given you the wrong impression. You seem to think I was asking for permission. The fact is, I'm going to see Lord Lane. Tonight. Here. Now --- will you tell me which room he's in, or shall I search the place myself? Mind you, I'm not always tidy in my searches. Things sometimes get broken." The butler gasps, lets him in and says some things including "If you are capable of exercising the least amount of discretion, I beg you ---" "I'm the most discreet man I know," Grant assured him with a flashing grin.

...but still above average.
I adore Lisa Kleypas. She is one of my favorite Romance writers - I like her style, I like that most of her heroes are members of the working class and not only Lords of the Ton, I like the fact that she is able to take a much used plot and turn it something unique due exclusively to her amazing storytelling abilities.
I also adore her because she has given me my top two favorite Romance Heroes: St Vincent (Devil in Winter) and Derek Craven (Dreaming of You) . She has delighted me with interesting and spunky heroines such as Lawless Lily and Lilian Westcliff. And this is why it breaks my heart to say that Someone to Watch Over Me didn't do much for me.
I mean, it's not by any means, a bad book. Once again, she shows how good of a writer she is - this time she deals with the old amnesia + revenge scenario which, in the hands of a less qualified writer, would leave me wondering "why I am reading this"; but in her hands she manages to add something that gets me going. And that something is definitely the characters she invents.
Grant Morgan is a good man and a good hero. He works as a Bow Street Runner, a sort of police officer and as the story begins he is called to investigate a drowning. Once he gets to scene he recognizes the victim as Vivien Duvall, London's most famous courtesan. She is barely alive and it is clear that the incident has been a failed endeavor of murder - she has strangling marks around her neck. Grant takes her to his home so he can keep her safe and find out who is trying to kill her but when she regains conscience , they realize she does not remember anything, not even who she is. Which brings us to the revenge scenario - Grant has vowed to make her pay for some rumors that she had spread around the Ton that she refused his advances when they very first met but it was actually the other way around. He sees the current situation as a perfect way of getting back at her by telling Vivien that he is her current protector - he plans to use her and dump her.
But of course, nothing goes according to plan as there is something about Vivien that is not quite right. She doesn't behave as a courtesan; she has an air of innocence that is very puzzling and attractive to Grant. She is, in fact very adamant that she would not be capable of doing the things she is said to have done. She feels this connection to Grant because he saved her and as they go about investigating the mystery of who tried to kill her, Grant can not help but to feel utterly attracted to her and right from the very beginning he thinks that if he didn't know that she was a conniving, ruthless woman he would be quite mad about her. And as they succumb to their attraction to each other they finally realize what is clear to us - that she is not who they think she is. And now, they must run against time to find out the truth, get the would-be killer who is still at large and to come to terms with their insecurities so they can get their happy ending.
There are amazing sequences in the book, specially the ones relating to Grant realizing his feelings and how important Vivien is to him but I also felt like there was something missing front his read and I am not sure what. Perhaps, the fact that towards the end of the story Grant became a bit too overbearing for my taste not giving Vivien the time she needed to get to grips with who she really was and what she wanted for her life.
In the end, it was a nice read but not the Amazing and Heartwarming that I have come to expect from Lisa Kleypas. I have high hopes that the other two books in this series will be better. If not, it doesn't matter; she still is an auto-buy for me.

I really enjoyed this book even though I figured out the twist before it was revealed. I liked the character of Grant and even though I did like Vivien, she was a little boring/meek/mild. The love scenes were good and it gives you a good preview to the subsequent book which is Lady Sophia's Lover.

This was a pretty good story. I really enjoy the bow street runner stories, and this was a good start to them. I did like how Grant's view of Lillian changed over the course of the book, and how he eventually came to love her, even though he thought she was someone she wasn't. It was a pretty good read!
