"Divine By Choice"
A Novel of Parthalon
By
P.C. Cast
Shannon Parker, Beloved of Epona and now living in the lap of luxury in Parthalon is suddenly pulled back into the modern world from whence she came. Summoned back by the mirror image of her centaur husband, ClanFintan, Clint Freeman a handsome and brave former Air Force pilot has been battling with Shannon's evil twin Rhiannon.
But Shannon isn't the only one who has been pulled out of Parthalon. The evil spirit of the demon Shannon helped to vanquish in "Divine By Mistake" Nuada has followed her into the modern world and is threatening her friends and family. Together with Clint Shannon must find a way to stop Nuada, Rhiannon, and the other evil forces that are keeping her from returning to the world she has come to love.
After the very first few chapters of "Divine By Choice" I was not holding out much hope for the book as a whole. The slow start had my eyes skimming passages and at times pages, waiting for the actual plot to start.
Despite the slow start however, about 50 pages in the story finally started to snowball and it continued from there culminating in a page-turning end. I think Cast sort of did herself a disfavor by not making the ending a cliffhanger however. Don't get me wrong, I want to read the subsequent book in the series, but I can wait on it, I'm not rushing out to buy the book so I can start ASAP.
Overall this is another classic Cast book. Lots of mystery, good love scenes, and some excitement sprinkle her fantasy novels. As I tell my students, sprinkles are no good without a yummy sundae underneath. Fortunately for Cast her sundae is just as yummy as her sprinkles. She has a great story/theme running with the Partholon series and I find myself more drawn to her as an author the more I read her works.
Cast keeps the adventure and excitement from her very first book "Divine by Mistake" going in "Divine by Choice," a definite can't miss for Cast fans or anyone looking for a fun and adventurous series. Keep `em coming P.C.!
Four Stars.

I was really looking forward to reading DIVINE BY CHOICE after DIVINE BY MISTAKE. But I was so disappointed in DBC. ***SPOILERS***
The book begins almost where DBM ends. Rhea, Epona's Beloved, is a newlywed and finds out she is pregnant.
She gets "pulled" back to Oklahoma (literally) and meets the mirror image of her husband, the fabulous ClanFintan (who didn't see this coming?). His name is Clint and by the end of the story I really don't like Clint or Rhea/Shannon for that matter. I feel for ClanFintan.
At one point Cast describes (and wants us to believe) Clint as an honorable man. Uhhh...as far as I know, "honorable men" do not try to sleep with married women. A few chapters later, Shannon comes to the realization that Carolan, Alanna, and their mirror images Gene, Suzanna, look alike and have similarities, but are different people. Okay...but then after being with Clint for hours, Shannon is ready to jump into bed with Clint (ClanFintan who?) and she realizes she "is in love". I also found the aldultery ironic because at one point Shannon compares herself to Rhiannon and comes to the conclusion that her self-control is one of the things that sets her apart from the former Chosen One.
Rhiannon and Nuada are back. There is a graphic and unnecessary incident with Nuada where two innocent pups are killed in a greusome manner. Rhiannon and Shannon finally come face-to-face and the climatic confrontation is lukewarm at best.
Cast adds the obligatory sex. The portions that involve Rhiannon are disturbing and anything else is embarrassing, not erotic.
In general, the book just lacked the Magic of DBM. I am not even going to bother with DIVINE BY BLOOD.

Shannon Parker thought she'd settled into Partholon and her role as Epona's Chosen (see DIVINE BY MISTAKE for more details) but she was wrong. She is about to find herself sent back to Oklahoma as her mirror image, Rhiannon, is trying to unleash a great evil. Will Shannon be able to defeat this terrible evil without her close confidantes in Partholon? And how will she handle being so close to Clint Freeman, a human who is the mirror image of her centaur husband?
DIVINE BY CHOICE is the second book in a trilogy but can easily be read as a stand alone. Perhaps the only element readers won't have a full picture of is the sheer breadth of Shannon's love for her husband, ClanFintan. P.C. Cast does provide some glimpses into the strength of their love but readers new to the series may not have the same attachment to ClanFintan as those who have already read DIVINE BY MISTAKE (or its very first incarnation, GODDESS BY MISTAKE).
P.C. Cast always does a spectacular job at developing her characters and their immediate relationships. DIVINE BY CHOICE was a difficult read for me at times. The relationship between Shannon and Clint disturbed me, partially because I had such a strong emotional attachment to Shannon's marriage with ClanFintan. I also struggled with the whole question of infidelity although P.C. Cast makes great efforts to explain the relationships in the context of her mirror image worlds. Romance readers, in particular, will have difficulties with the relationship between Shannon and Clint.
DIVINE BY CHOICE is overall another splendid fantasy tale from the very talented P.C. Cast. The world of Partholon is one I want to explore further as Ms. Cast teases us with the beauty of this mirror image world of our own. Readers familiar with the very first tale in this trilogy will appreciate seeing Rhiannon's history explained as it adds some understanding as to why Shannon and Rhiannon could take such divergent paths.

Normally I LOVE books by PC Cast. I have read all of them and recommend them highly but, after reading Divine by Mistake I couldnt wait to dive into Divine by Choice and at very first I wasnt dissapointed but that all changed after Shannon committed adultery with her husbands double (minus the horse body and tail). I could understand her being attracted to Clint, he looks just like her husband and she is pregnant but come on, sleeping with him went too far. Then to return to her true love ClanFintan and not being able to sleep with him because he reminds her of Clint, that went wayyyy tooo far. It made her strong, sensual, loving husband look weak and simple to have him just go along with her pining for a man she shouldnt have slept with in the very first place. I am hoping that Divine by blood will keep her faithful to her husband and for the story to go back to the great way the Divine by Mistake was written in. I have not been so dissapointed in any of PC Casts books both the Divine series and the Goddess series so I have faith in her to come back with another winner.

P.C. Cast's very first book in this series 'Divine By Mistake' (re-release of her book 'Goddess By Mistake') was a fun, light, beach read fantasy of the type one expects from Luna Books. I enjoyed it very much and looked forward to this follow-up.
Unfortunately our heroine Shannon spends most of the book puking her guts up as she battles her evil twin Rhiannon in modern day Oklahoma. The pace of the book is compromised by this and although the reason behind said "illness" sets up the premise for the third book to come 'Divine By Blood', its use as a plot device has already been done to death many, many times before by authors and just made me think "oh, of course, here we go again...."
Having said that the book does have a couple of moments that harken back to the feel of the very first one.
I'm not really looking forward to the third book and will most likely pass on it. If you like paranormal/fantasy romance then this author will be your cup of tea. If you like your fantasy with a bit more substance, try Mercedes Lackey, Jennifer Roberson or Anne McCaffrey's 'Pern' series.
