This historical journey through United States history chronicles the African American experience from its origin to the present, with a sophisticated yet clearly written style. The book also follows what is happening in the larger American society from the individual and group outlooks of African Americans. It focuses on African Americans at the center of such pivotal events as military conflicts, eras of settlement and expansion, slavery and abolition, emancipation and reconstruction, industrialization and urbanization, social change, racial turbulence and political upheaval, cultural and intellectual transformation, the African American journey towards freedom, and full participation in American democracy. User popularity level: out of 5 stars

Rated by buyers 5 out of 5 stars - Great eye opener. MUST READ. Smooth reading.
To keep it plain and simple: After reading this book I've come to the conclusion that African-American history is an essential read, especially with this book. Often times, some of us may not think African-American history is rich or we may not really understand their situation in America today. This book changes that, it teaches that African-Americans have a rich history and that books like this must be read to understand their stance in American society today. GREAT BOOK.
